The ReMico project stems from the need to reduce the use of synthetic fungicides in agriculture, limiting their environmental impact and meeting the demand for safe and sustainable agro-food products. The initiative proposes an innovative and circular approach based on the use of natural extracts obtained from agri-food supply chain waste, which are rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and terpenes, to be used as an alternative to traditional fungicides in wheat protection.

These extracts are studied and tested to combat the main fungal pathogens of wheat responsible for production losses and mycotoxin contamination, with a specific focus on Fusarium Head Blight. The objective is to reduce the spread of fungal diseases and improve grain safety by verifying the effectiveness of natural solutions both under controlled conditions and in the field through experimental trials conducted at Lombardy farms. Activities include selecting the most effective extracts, agronomic testing under different environmental conditions, and an in-depth analysis of mycotoxin levels in the resulting products to guarantee effective and safe solutions.

ReMico thus promotes the valorization of agro-industrial waste as a resource, transforming it into useful tools for crop protection and contributing to a circular agriculture model.
