ADAPTA-TOM

Areas of intervention:
Integrated physiological and genomic approaches to improve tomato resilience to drought, flooding, and heat under climate change conditions.
Goals:

The ADAPTA-TOM project was established to respond to the critical issues linked to climate irregularity, which threatens the productivity and quality of tomatoes—a strategic crop for the regional and national agri-food sector.

The project aims to bridge the gap between research on physiological and genomic responses to environmental stress and the actual availability of seeds adapted to different production contexts. It focuses on developing varieties that are more resilient and efficient in resource use, particularly water, through an innovative non-GMO approach.

Project activities include selecting and characterizing tomato genotypes that are more tolerant to multiple stresses and tailored to the Lombardy environment, using advanced genomic techniques and physiological evaluations under controlled conditions. The new lines will then be tested in greenhouses and open fields across partner farms to evaluate their agronomic, physiological, and qualitative performance under real operating conditions.

The project is completed by dissemination and exploitation activities, including field demonstration days, technical meetings, and dedicated communication tools. The objective is to spread the developed innovations to farms, encouraging their adoption while consolidating a stable network between research and production capable of rapidly translating scientific results into concrete solutions.
